MLBTradeRumors · Rotowire · MLB.comAfter three blown saves and a 7.59 ERA through 10.2 IP, the Blue Jays officially pulled Jeff Hoffman from the ninth inning. GM Ross Atkins announced a committee approach, but Louis Varland — who induced a bases-loaded game-ending double play Monday — is the clear frontrunner with a 0.00 ERA and 19 K in 13 IP this season. Tyler Rogers and Braydon Fisher also in the mix.
Fantasy take: Add Louis Varland immediately in all leagues — his ratios are elite and the 'committee' label is a formality. He is the closer. Drop Hoffman in 12-team leagues; the only reason to hold is a 14+ team league with no alternatives. This is the biggest saves shakeup since the Díaz surgery.
Suárez was scratched with what was initially called mid-back discomfort, later diagnosed as a low-grade oblique strain. The Reds backdated his IL stint to April 23, making May 3 the earliest return. Manager Terry Francona called it low-grade and is hopeful for a quick turnaround. Ke'Bryan Hayes slides into the everyday third base role.
Fantasy take: Stash Suárez on your IL — the 'low-grade' designation and May 3 eligibility suggest a short absence. Do not drop in 12+ team leagues. Hayes is a streaming-caliber 3B fill-in for the next 10-14 days in deeper formats, but his .670 OPS limits his ceiling.
Anthony has missed four straight games with back soreness after being expected back Thursday. He was available off the bench but was not used. Manager Alex Cora says he 'should be back over the weekend' but the timeline keeps sliding. The Red Sox are in Baltimore getting handled by the Orioles' hot lineup.
Fantasy take: In weekly-lock leagues, he is still worth locking in for next week based on Cora's timeline. In daily-moves formats, sit him until he is confirmed back in the starting lineup. Four straight missed games for a 21-year-old with a back issue bears monitoring, but this is not an IL-level concern yet.
Skenes was untouchable in Pittsburgh's 6-0 win over Milwaukee — 7 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K. His first zero-walk start of the season. Through five starts he carries a 3-1 record with a 3.27 ERA and 23:7 K:BB in 22 IP. The command is catching up to the stuff.
Fantasy take: This is a 'set and forget your SP1' story. If someone in your league is panicking about the 3.27 ERA being higher than his 2025 pace, this is your buy-low window slamming shut. The zero-walk start signals the command is clicking. Do not trade him.

OF · Athletics · ~5% owned
Two-homer game in the A's 8-1 rout of Texas. Cortes is slashing .339/.403/.625 over 62 PA and was the most-added player on Yahoo this week. At 5% owned, he is the top deep-league grab right now.
2B/SS · Cleveland Guardians · ~8% owned
Multi-homer game in Cleveland's 8-6 win over Toronto. The multi-position eligibility adds roster flexibility. Available in virtually all formats — worth a speculative add in 14+ team leagues.
C · Detroit Tigers · ~51% owned
Statcast says Dingler is even better than his already-solid numbers show — .364 wOBA with a .440 xwOBA and 20% barrel rate. The buy window is closing fast. If he is under 50% in your league, grab him before the catcher-needy masses figure it out.
3B · Tampa Bay Rays · ~45% owned
Former #1 Prospect
Pedigree
Two-homer game as the former top prospect is finally arriving. Caminero has elite bat speed and the Rays are letting him play every day. If he is below 50% in your league, grab him now — this is the talent catching up to the profile.
SS/OF · Pittsburgh Pirates · ~12% owned
1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 SB
Last Night
Homer, 3 RBI, and a steal in the same game — the five-category upside is tantalizing for a rookie. Griffin is getting everyday reps for Pittsburgh and the speed/power combo is rare. Deeper leagues should have added already.
🌱 Stash of the Week
Tyler Black — 2B/3B, Milwaukee Brewers (~12% owned)
Recalled from AAA Nashville on Friday. The Brewers' 2021 first-round pick is a patient lefty hitter with a career minor-league OBP above .370 and multi-position eligibility (2B/3B/OF depending on platform). The recall timing — with Luis Matos DFA'd to make room — suggests an extended look, not a cup of coffee. Worth a speculative add in 12+ team leagues. If the playing time materializes, the OBP alone makes him a points-league gem.

Low-grade oblique strain, backdated to April 23. Earliest return May 3. Francona called it 'minor' — oblique strains for hitters can linger but the low-grade tag is encouraging.

Right ulnar nerve inflammation. The Rockies recalled LHP Sammy Peralta to fill his roster spot. Feltner was a streaming option at best — this IL stint is a non-event for most fantasy leagues.

Transferred from 15-day to 60-day IL with a right elbow strain. The Cubs bullpen is decimated — five relievers now on the IL. Caleb Thielbar also hit the IL today with a hamstring strain, leaving virtually no high-leverage options.

Back soreness — has missed four straight games. Available off the bench but has not been used. Cora says he 'should be back over the weekend.' Not yet IL-level, but the sliding timeline is concerning.

Scouting Report
FanGraphsFanGraphs · by Ben Clemens · April 16
Taj Bradley's Star Turn
Through his first four starts of 2026 with the Twins, Taj Bradley has been one of the best pitchers in baseball. The 25-year-old has posted a 1.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a 29:8 K:BB ratio across 21.2 innings — a massive leap from his prior career as a league-average arm with inconsistent results.
The key to the breakout is his splitter, which has lost nearly two inches of induced vertical break compared to 2025, returning to the shape he threw during his strong 2024 stretch. That greater separation from his fastball is turning hitters inside out. Meanwhile, his fastball velocity is up almost a full mph, and all four of his offerings grade out at 110+ Stuff+.
Clemens argues this is not a small-sample fluke. Bradley dialing up each pitch by a notch or two — combined with the splitter shape change — was enough to transform him from a back-end starter into a front-of-rotation arm. The underlying metrics (career-best 12.8% SwStr%, 25.7% K-BB%, 2.69 SIERA) support sustainability.

The VerdictBuy the breakout. The pitch-shape changes to Bradley's splitter are mechanical and measurable, not random noise. He is a top-20 fantasy SP right now. The only caution flag is a declining start-to-start velocity trend — monitor over his next 2-3 turns.

Bullpen Bulletin
Closer Monkey · Beat ReportersThursday's nine-game slate produced four saves, five reliever wins, and seven losses. The biggest news: Cubs fill-in closer Caleb Thielbar blew a save and then exited with a hamstring injury, further decimating a Cubs bullpen that already has five relievers on the IL. Paul Sewald also cratered in Arizona, issuing a leadoff walk and surrendering a three-run homer.
