MLBTradeRumors · Rotowire · MLB.comGavin Williams struck out 11 over seven innings of one-run ball in the Guardians' 4-2 win over Baltimore, pushing his MLB-leading total to 40 strikeouts. His slider generated 12 whiffs on 20 swings — the most he's had with the pitch since the start of 2025. Brayan Rocchio added a three-run homer.
Fantasy take: Williams is the early AL Cy Young favorite and a top-10 SP in every format. The slider improvement is the key development — 12 whiffs on 20 swings is elite-tier usage. If you're in a dynasty league, his price has probably doubled since Opening Day and it's still a buy.
Cody Bellinger hit a pair of two-run homers (one into the second deck in right) and drove in five, while Will Warren tied his career high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings of two-run ball without a walk. Warren's ERA dropped to 2.49 through five starts as he continues to hold Cole's rotation spot.
Fantasy take: Warren is the story with longer-term fantasy relevance — 11 K with zero walks is the profile of a top-30 SP. When Cole returns, the Yankees will have a tough call. Add Warren in all formats now. Bellinger's power is streaky but in this lineup, the counting stats will come.
J.T. Realmuto exited Saturday's loss to Atlanta in the 7th inning with lower back tightness. Manager Rob Thomson said Realmuto initially jammed his knee and back on a play at the plate Friday. Thomson doesn't currently believe an IL stint is needed but Realmuto is unlikely to play Sunday.
Fantasy take: Hold but don't start Sunday. Lower back injuries in 35-year-old catchers are always concerning even when described as 'tightness.' If he misses more than a day or two, Garrett Stubbs becomes a streaming option. Monitor closely Monday.
Tarik Skubal struck out 10 over six innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox, continuing his case as the AL's most consistent starter. The 2025 Cy Young finalist now has multiple double-digit K games this season and his slider remains one of the most unhittable pitches in baseball.
Fantasy take: Skubal is a top-5 SP and performing like it. If you drafted him, enjoy the ride. If you didn't, the buy window closed weeks ago. The only question is workload management — Detroit has been careful with his innings the last two years.

1B/OF · Colorado Rockies · ~5% owned
Multi-hit game with a steal from a Coors Field regular. Johnston has been quietly getting everyday at-bats and the speed/contact combo plays in deep NL-only and 15-team formats. Free everywhere.
OF · Seattle Mariners · ~12% owned
Another multi-hit game as the Mariners' everyday OF option. Canzone profiles as a high-contact, low-power contributor — useful in OBP and average leagues in deeper formats.
SP · Chicago White Sox · ~8% owned
Back-to-back quality starts for the White Sox. The K rate is low but the contact management has been surprisingly effective. Streaming option against weak lineups in deep leagues.
SP · Cleveland Guardians · ~52% owned
Leads MLB in strikeouts with 40 and is on a Cy Young pace. The slider improvement is driving the breakout — 12 whiffs on 20 swings Saturday. If he's still in standard-league territory, that won't last another week.
SP · Philadelphia Phillies · ~45% owned
8 K scoreless outing against the Braves. Sanchez has been one of the Phillies' most reliable arms and the K rate is ticking up. Solid SP4 in 12-team formats.
SP · Los Angeles Angels · ~50% owned
Shutout with 8 K for the Angels. Kikuchi's fastball has been playing up in the AL and the new pitch mix is generating more whiffs. Standard-league add with an SP4 floor.
SP · New York Yankees · ~62% owned
Career-high 11 K with zero walks — the third double-digit K game of his career. Warren is making a strong case to keep his rotation spot even when Cole returns. 2.49 ERA through 5 starts. Must-roster in all formats.
SP · Milwaukee Brewers · ~70% owned
The comeback continues — 7 IP of one-run ball. Woodruff's velocity is back and the command has been sharp all month. If he slipped through your draft, fix it now. SP3 floor.
SP · Atlanta Braves · ~82% owned
Vintage Sale — 7 K in 7 IP of one-run ball against Philly. The Braves are getting ace-level production from their rotation and Sale's slider is as sharp as it's been in years. Shallow-league managers who let him slide should course-correct.
🌱 Stash of the Week
Andrew Alvarez — SP, Washington Nationals (~3% owned)
The left-handed prospect was recalled from Rochester on Friday and could slot into the Nationals' rotation as they manage workloads through the first month. Alvarez has electric stuff with a fastball that sits 94-96 and a sweeper that generates chase. The Nationals' rotation depth is thin enough to give him a real shot at 5+ starts. At 3% owned, he's essentially free — the kind of speculative add that costs nothing and could return SP4 value if the stuff translates.

Gavin Williams Stays on Cy Young Track With 11-Strikeout Performance
SI profiles Gavin Williams' rapid ascent to the top of the AL Cy Young race. Through five starts, he leads MLB with 40 strikeouts — 11 of which came Saturday against the Orioles. The article digs into his slider evolution: 12 whiffs on 20 swings, the best single-game slider performance he's had since the start of 2025.
The mechanical details are illuminating. Williams has shortened his arm path and added late horizontal break to the slider, creating more separation from his four-seam fastball. Hitters are committing to the fastball and getting carved by the slider down and away. The pitch tunneling data backs it up — his tunnel distance has tightened from 2.8 to 2.2 feet since last season.
The sustainability question is real but encouraging: Williams' ground-ball rate is up, his walk rate is down, and the Cleveland pitching development machine (which produced Messick, Cantillo, and Bibee in the same rotation) has a track record of turning talented arms into consistent performers.

The VerdictWilliams is a top-10 SP in every format and the early AL Cy Young favorite. The slider improvement is mechanical, not random — shortened arm path plus late break equals sustained dominance. Buy aggressively in dynasty. In redraft, he's a set-and-forget SP1/SP2.
