MLBTradeRumors · Rotowire · MLB.comThe Dodgers reinstate Betts from the 10-day IL tonight after he missed 36 days with a right oblique strain. He completed a 2-for-5 / BB rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City over the weekend. Manager Dave Roberts said the team will manage his workload early — 'not going to run him out there every single day.' Espinal stays on the roster; either Kim or Freeland gets optioned. Betts will play shortstop.
Fantasy take: Activate immediately if you have him. Expect 5-out-of-7 starts in the first 10 days back, and the lineup spot will be in the heart of the order. Even a slightly diminished Betts (.258 BA in 2025) is a top-30 hitter in a top-3 offense. If by some miracle he's on your wire, claim before Monday's lineup card is posted.
The Dodgers transferred Edwin Díaz from the 15-day to the 60-day IL — confirmation that he's out until at least mid-July after his April 20 elbow surgery to remove loose bodies. Wyatt Mills called up to fill the 40-man spot. Tanner Scott remains the primary closer, but Alex Vesia continues to get high-leverage looks too.
Fantasy take: Drop Díaz in standard redraft formats — even an IL slot is expensive when the timeline is 'second half' and saves chances are zero. Tanner Scott (top-12 RP since taking the role) is the Dodgers' clear primary closer through June. If you've been holding Díaz speculatively in a deep league, this is your get-off-the-train moment.
The Tigers transferred Justin Verlander from the 15-day to the 60-day IL with left hip inflammation. That's a procedural move that pushes any potential return to at least mid-July, but the underlying narrative is grimmer — Verlander, 43, has been dealing with the hip since spring and his fastball had lost 2+ mph before the IL stint. No timeline given for return. Detroit has Tarik Skubal coming back this month, so the rotation hole is small.
Fantasy take: Drop Verlander in all redraft formats. Even if he returns by August, two months of recovery from a hip issue at age 43 doesn't typically produce useful fantasy lines. Tigers' rotation will lean on Skubal (returning late May), Casey Mize, and Reese Olson for the second half. Skubal is a buy-low target right now if a fellow manager is panic-selling.
Tigers RF Kerry Carpenter hit the 10-day IL after colliding with the outfield wall Saturday on a Bobby Witt Jr. grounder — left AC joint sprain. The Tigers called up Gage Workman (.358/.413/.590 / 1.003 OPS in Triple-A Toledo), who immediately delivered: pinch-hit two-run HR to break a tie in the 6th of Detroit's 6-3 win over the Royals — his first career MLB hit was a homer in his first MLB at-bat.
Fantasy take: Workman is the priority deep-league add of the morning — at 0% rostered, the playing-time runway with Carpenter out (and Riley Greene struggling) is real. The contact quality at Triple-A was elite. Carpenter loses 6 HR over 117 PA but the 34% K-rate kept him from being a fantasy star anyway. In 14+ team leagues, claim Workman now.
Jacob deGrom matched his season-high 10 strikeouts in 7 IP of 3-hit, no-walk dominance to beat the Cubs 3-0 — picking up his 99th career win in the process. The 1,900th career K came in the first inning. deGrom is the second-fastest pitcher to reach 1,900 (256 games), behind only Randy Johnson (252). His ERA dropped to 3.11. Evan Carter's 2-run HR in the 8th sealed the shutout.
Fantasy take: If you own deGrom, you have a top-7 SP rest of season. He's 2-of-7 starts with 10+ K, the velocity is back, and the Rangers' bullpen behind him is converting wins. The Cy Young conversation is real (Skenes, Soriano, Schlittler, Misiorowski, deGrom — five-way race). Don't buy at this price; just enjoy.

Workman delivered a pinch-hit 2-run HR in his MLB debut Sunday off Noah Cameron — first hit of his career was a tie-breaking homer. He hit .358/.413/.590 with 1.003 OPS at Triple-A Toledo. With Carpenter on the IL and Riley Greene scuffling, Workman gets a real OF/3B runway over the next 10-14 days. Add aggressively in 14+ team leagues; speculative add in 12-team formats.

Pitcher List's deep-league specialty add. McDonald starts tonight at LAD — a tough draw, but he's filling the Logan Webb rotation slot through May 20 at minimum, which gives him 2-3 more starts before Webb is back. The next home matchup (likely vs. CWS) is the streaming dream. Hold/add now in deep leagues to lock him in before that one.

Today's Matchup
Pitcher List's top SP add today. Lambert tossed 7 scoreless against the Dodgers last week and starts tonight against the Mariners' improving-but-not-elite offense. The 2.42 ERA across 22.1 IP is built on real contact-management skill. Houston's rotation depth is suddenly an embarrassment of riches. Top-50 SP rest of season; add in 12+ team leagues.

Pitcher List's second-priority hitter. Waldschmidt's first start as a D-back was a 3-RBI showcase — and the underlying profile (16% chase rate at AAA, plus power-speed combo) suggests this isn't a flash. He's batting 9th right now, which is the only flag. Add aggressively in deep leagues, speculative in 12-team.

Pitcher List flagged Bogaerts as still underowned — 38% of leagues don't have him. The 7 HR / 5 SB in his last 7 is real, the season projection is 20/20, and the SS position scarcity makes him a must-roster. Claim immediately wherever he's on the wire; this won't last another week.
🌱 Stash of the Week
Fairbanks is activated from the IL on Tuesday and per FanGraphs Roto Riteup, 'should resume closing duties this week.' The Marlins ran a committee in his absence (Faucher-Cabrera-Bender) and converted only 60% of save chances, so Fairbanks's role is fully secure on return. He carried a 1.45 ERA at the time of injury with 13 K vs. 1 BB. Top-15 RP rest of season — claim in any league he's still floating before tonight's lineup card hits.

Headlines Xander Bogaerts (SD, 62%) as the priority shallow-league add despite the high ownership, Peter Lambert (HOU, 9%) as the top SP, and Ryan Waldschmidt (ARI, 9%) as a deep-league prospect with multi-cat upside. Other names: Trevor McDonald (SF, 4%) for a two-start week, and Nick Martinez (TB, most-added) for those still floating in shallow.
02
Sedler walks through Pete Fairbanks's return Tuesday, Jo Adell's emergence from a slump (2 HR Sunday vs. TOR), the Jacob Wilson shoulder sprain ramifications for the A's, and the Willson Contreras hand X-ray scare. Also notes Peter Lambert as today's streaming favorite at home vs. Seattle.

MLBTR's full AL East note covers the Contreras hand HBP (X-rays negative), Suarez's spot-start prep, Barger's return for Toronto, Trevor Rogers's rehab progress in Boston, and Gerrit Cole's 77-pitch rehab outing for Double-A Somerset. Cole appears 2-3 starts away from a Yankees return.

Edwin Díaz — RP, Los Angeles Dodgers
STATUS UPDATE: Transferred from 15-day to 60-day IL after April 20 surgery to remove loose bodies from right elbow. Not expected back until the second half — realistic return is mid-to-late July. Wyatt Mills called up to fill 40-man spot.
IL-60
STATUS UPDATE: Transferred from 15-day to 60-day IL with left hip inflammation. Procedural — but the bigger picture is concerning. Verlander, 43, has lost 2+ mph off his fastball and the Tigers haven't given a timetable. Realistic best case: late July return.
IL-10
NEW: 10-day IL with a left AC joint sprain after crashing into the outfield wall Saturday on a Bobby Witt Jr. grounder. AC sprains in hitters typically last 3-5 weeks even when listed as 10-day. Workman called up and homered in his debut.
DTD
NEW: Left shoulder sprain after a diving stop attempt Sunday vs. Baltimore. Wore a sling postgame; imaging Monday will set the timeline. An IL stint appears likely. Hernaiz replaced him; Max Muncy is also out, so the A's infield is thin.
IL-15
NEW: 15-day IL retroactive to May 9 with right shoulder discomfort. MRI shows no structural damage; the Reds are being precautionary. Lowder had been pitching to a 5.40 ERA. Chase Petty likely fills the rotation spot. With Williamson on 60-day IL and Hunter Greene still recovering, the Reds rotation is thin.

deGrom Reaches 1,900 Career Ks (Second-Fastest Ever) — The Vintage Form Is Real
Jacob deGrom struck out the Cubs' Nico Hoerner in the first inning Sunday to reach 1,900 career strikeouts — and he got there in only 256 career appearances, the second-fastest in MLB history behind Randy Johnson (252). The line for the day: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 10 K, 0 ER, 3-0 win, 99th career W. His ERA dropped to 3.11. This was the second double-digit-K game of his season (other one came April 23 vs. PIT).
The fantasy story is that deGrom is healthy — finally, fully, durably. The velocity is back: average fastball at 99.1 mph vs. the Cubs, peaking at 100.4. The slider is generating a 47% whiff rate. The 0.79 WHIP across 7 starts is elite-tier (and the underlying xFIP backs it). Texas's rotation behind him (Eovaldi, Leiter, Kumar Rocker) has been solid enough that the Rangers' offense converts wins reliably.
Rest-of-season outlook: Top-7 SP. The pitch counts are still being managed (rarely above 95 pitches), but that's by design — the Rangers want him at 28+ starts. If he stays healthy, 200+ K and a sub-3.00 ERA are firmly on the table. The Cy Young race is between deGrom, Skenes, Soriano, Schlittler, and Misiorowski — and deGrom's strikeout rate gives him the edge in any roto-scoring league.

The VerdictTop-7 SP rest of season. The vintage deGrom is back — sub-3 ERA, 10+ K games becoming routine, and the velocity is sustainable through the workload Texas has set for him. The Cy Young conversation is genuine. If you own him, you own a top-3 fantasy starter at his peak.

Closer Monkey · Beat ReportersSaturday's slate: 6 reliever wins, 5 saves, 3 losses. Locked closers continue to be Aroldis Chapman (BOS, 8), Cade Smith (CLE, 11), Louis Varland (TOR, 5), and Erik Sabrowski (CLE setup leverage). Mason Miller (SD) and Paul Sewald (ARI) are also fully locked. Twins, Reds, and Athletics remain committee plays. Pete Fairbanks (MIA) returns Tuesday and reclaims the role from the Faucher-Cabrera platoon.

| Pete Fairbanks | MIA | 🟢 Locked | Activated Tuesday and resumes the closer role per Roberts. Marlins ran a committee in his absence and only converted 60% of save chances — Fairbanks is fully secure on return. 1.45 ERA pre-injury with 13 K/1 BB. Top-15 RP rest of season. |
| Mason Miller | SD | 🟢 Locked | The cleanest setup-to-closer story of the year. 0.84 ERA, 23 K in 16 IP, and the role is uncontested with Robert Suarez out. Top-5 RP rest of season — at this point he's the priority RP add in any league he's somehow available. |
| Paul Sewald | ARI | 🟢 Locked | Sewald has the D-Backs' 9th locked since the role opened. Has converted 8 of 9 save chances. Top-15 RP rest of season — claim in any deep league still rostering him below 50%. |
| Tanner Scott | LAD | 🟡 Watch | Díaz transferred to 60-day IL Sunday — Scott is the Dodgers' primary closer through at least mid-July. Alex Vesia still gets the occasional high-leverage look. The role is secure; just temper save-count expectations because LA's offense often blows games open. |
| Reds + Twins + A's Bullpens | CIN/MIN/OAK | | Three genuine committees with no clear hierarchy. Twins used 6 different relievers for 7 saves this season (Luis García got his first Saturday); A's split between Perkins / Harris / Kuhnel; Reds' Ashcraft/Johnson committee is unstable.
